While browsing one of my favorite antique shops, nestled in a corner, an old shoebox with a missing top caught my eye. I got closer to the box, and as I saw the first glimpse of what was tucked chaotically inside, I knew right away I would be caught up in the magic of it. I picked the box up and found a small stool among all the clutter for sale and took a seat. Despite my strange guilt, I pulled the first card from the box. An hour and a half later, as the merchant spoke overhead to let everyone know they would be closing soon, I was a little sad there were no more adventures to read.
Hi Mom!!
We made it to the airport. Susie is a grand chauffeur. Thank you for looking at 1686 from time to time. We’ll bring you a matador from Spain, no bull! Love Ruth and Jack

Dear Mother,
We spent the day at Pompeii – absolutely incredible. The Silves man arrived Sunday and we leave tomorrow for Rome. Weather beautiful – cool and summery. Today we’re going to visit Amali just down the cliffs from us and Positano! Hope all goes well. See you soon! Love, Ruth & Jack.

Dear Mom,
This is the view from our window. Truly a beautiful place. Fresh figs and pears from the garden for breakfast this morning. Yesterday we took the train to Florence for the day. City is beautiful, but too many people! We are eating very well and taking drives to nearby villages and cities during the day. Tonight we’re eating in. Weather really sunny – we had rain, heavy winds through Sunday. Hope all is well. Love Ruth & Jack.

Dear Mom,
After 4 nights of being royally entertained at Oxford and an overnight with friends in Warwick, we’re now on the way to Scotland and the Isle of Mull. Weather wintery with temper low as 48 degrees. We’ve eaten too much – all the clothes are snug. Our car is good. J is doing a fine job of driving on the opposite side of the highway! More later from the heath and heatherland. Luv R & J.
